Getting Started with Base Camp: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Toastmasters Pathways
Getting Started with Base Camp
Whether you’re a brand new member or just haven’t had the chance to explore it yet, Base Camp is the online hub at the heart of your Toastmasters journey. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.
What Is Base Camp?
Base Camp is the Toastmasters online platform where all your learning, tracking, and progress submission happens. It hosts videos explaining what’s expected of each speech, downloadable resources and checklists, and the tools you need to submit completed levels on your chosen pathway.
Here’s the key thing to remember: no matter how many speeches you deliver in the room, if you’re not logging them on Base Camp, they won’t count towards your recognition. Base Camp is the official record of your Toastmasters journey.
Understanding Pathways
Toastmasters follows a structured learning system called Pathways. There are currently six pathways to choose from, each made up of five levels and a series of projects (speeches). Before you dive in, it’s worth visiting the Toastmasters website to review all six and decide which best fits your goals.
A few important things to know:
- Your first pathway is free. Additional pathways can be purchased.
- You can follow more than one pathway at a time.
- Once you complete one pathway, you can move straight on to another.
Logging In to Base Camp
- Visit the Toastmasters website and click Log In (look for it in the top right corner).
- Enter the email address and password you used when you first joined Toastmasters.
- If you’ve forgotten your login details, contact a committee member — they’ll help you regain access.
- Once logged in, you’ll see a welcome screen. Click Go to Base Camp.
Navigating the Dashboard
When you first land on Base Camp, you’ll see the pathway (or pathways) you’ve selected. If you haven’t chosen one yet, all six will be displayed and you can make your selection here. Once chosen, only your active pathway will appear on future logins.
Click on your pathway to see your five levels laid out. Start at Level 1 — that’s where everyone begins.
Working Through Your Pathway
Level 1: The Icebreaker
Every pathway begins with an Icebreaker speech — your very first speech in front of the club. When you click on the Icebreaker project, you’ll find:
- A project checklist to work through before your speech
- An evaluation resource sheet (the same one your evaluator will use)
- A worksheet to help you plan and structure your speech
- Resources and videos to guide you
As you work through each section, click Next to progress. You’ll be prompted to reflect on what you already know, what you’re wondering about, and what you hope to learn — a great way to prepare mentally for your first speech.
Completing a Level
For each level, you’ll need to:
- Work through all the resources and complete any questions or reflections.
- Schedule your speech with your club.
- Deliver your speech — making sure your evaluator knows what feedback you’re looking for.
- Log your speech on Base Camp, recording the date, club, evaluator, and any notes.
- Submit your level for completion — this will be reviewed and approved by your VP Education.
Once Level 1 is approved, move on to Level 2 and continue until your pathway is complete.
Tips & Troubleshooting
Having trouble logging in or the site is slow? The Toastmasters website can get busy, especially at the start of a new Toastmasters year. Try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or checking your internet connection.
Getting a submission error? This usually means you haven’t completed all the required steps in a level. Go back through the level and check for anything you may have missed — fill it in, and you should then be able to submit.
Finding your pace: There’s no single right way to work through your pathway. Some members prefer to move quickly; others spend an hour or two each week working steadily through the material. What matters most is doing the Base Camp work before you deliver your speech, not after. Set yourself a goal — for example, “I’d like to complete Level 1 within six months” — and speak to your VP Education about scheduling your speeches to help you reach it.
Additional Resources
- The Toastmasters website has plenty of guides and resources built in.
- There are Base Camp tutorial videos available on YouTube — a quick search will turn up plenty of walkthroughs.
- Don’t forget your fellow members and the club WhatsApp group — if you’re stuck, just ask. Someone will know the answer.
- Toastmasters International also has a dedicated support team for technical issues with the website.
In Summary
Base Camp is your roadmap through Toastmasters. Once you understand how to navigate it, you’ll be able to track your progress, access all the guidance you need, and move confidently through your chosen pathway. Take it one level at a time, log everything, and don’t be afraid to ask for help along the way.
Any questions? Reach out to your VP Education or ask in the club WhatsApp group — we’re all on the same journey.
